HELP with setting timing 1961 389cid

Please help - what are the steps in setting the timing on a 1961 Catalina 389 from scratch? The distributor is loose and the car will not fire. THanks!

Re: HELP with setting timing 1961 389cid

Hi, car is running - spark plug wires are in proper sequence according to firing order and plug numbers, however, how can we determine if the wires are on the correct distributor cap posts? Also, I do not have a diagram to determine how to secure distributor base from rotating (it moves freely approximately 90 degrees at present - I assume that there is a screw/bolt to lock? Thank you! Have you timed the dist to #1 firing and lined up the rotor for starters, tough to tell where you are with this, you may need help by the sound of it. There is a clamp that holds down the dist, where is it!

Line up the timing marks and look at the rotor. Its supposed to point at number 1. Then follow around the distributor from the 1 and go 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 . It should fire. It will need set by a timing light for exactness.

Re: HELP with setting timing 1961 389cid

Timing 101...

Remove no.1 spark plug (front, left side). Have helper "bump" starter while holding your finger over the spark plug hole. When the compression "blows" your finger off the hole, THAT'S near TDC, no.1. Turn the crankshaft with a ratchet/socket (15/16") until timing mark is at about 8 degrees BTDC.

Insert a screwdriver into no.1 plug wire and hold it NEAR (not touching) ground. Loosen the clamp holding the distributor. Turn the key to the "on" position. Turn it slowly, back and forth, until you establish exactly where the spark "hits". Tighten the distributor. You are now at about 8 BTDC.

NOTE: Unlike Chevy and other GM engines, Pontiac distributor turns COUNTER-clockwise.
