windshield wipers
I have a '93 Astro (3.1L) we bought used. The wipers have a mind of their own. When we first got the van they would do about two strokes on occasion. Not a big deal. Changed out the steering column with a used unit, and the wiper problem has gotten worse--now they go about four times almost every few minutes. They're driving us nuts! There doesn't seem to be any consistent cause; whether the turn signal is used or not, acceleration, deceleration, turning the wheel--but sometimes none of the above. Short of pulling the fuse, how can we stop this!

Re: windshield wipers
Pretty obvious that you are looking at the wrong part- the well known problem is not in the switch on the steering wheel but in the contacts inside the wiper motor itself- the park position is not working properly- so a new circuit board for the wiper motor is needed or you can fix it by repositioning the two wiper brushes- either way this is know as "phantom" wipers- happens a lot with the S-10 trucks and others- the reverse condition is another fix- where the wipers just stop or do not work- then there is a bad solder joint on the circuit board-- this board can be bought new for about $32 as opposed to the entire wiper motor for $160--

Re: windshield wipers
My 98 Astro had the same problem with the wipers, I replaced the board under the plastic cover on the motor assembly, and that cured the problem. Th part was about $20 at NAPA. There is a recall on the 99 Astro (my wife drove one for work) but not the 98, go figure.

Re: windshield wipers
pulled the cover off the wiper motor looks as if there is a bad spot but the wipers are working fine now.. so we'll just wait a while i guess. looks like a burnt spot by one of the solder spots.. or i'll just replace the board before winter
thanks for the help |
