damn careers

so i recently finished my first year of electrical engineering (although the first year is just sciences and maths, everyone takes the same stuff in first) and i just realised that i have no idea what the hell i want to do. i know i want to do engineering, i know i want to design cool stuff, and i know that i don't want to be messing around with circuits and crap for the next 40 years.

now i really want to go into the automotive field but i don't know how easily i can do that or what jobs there are. i can switch into mechanical engineering but i don't know if they'll look at me because now they've got automotive engineering at other universities.

does anyone know of a resource that would have listings for careers in different engineering streams or something of the sort? i've searched the SAE website but you need to be a member to access anything useful having to do with careers (it costs $10 and i don't have a credit card so i've got to wait for my parents to come home). i'm gonna see the career counselor at my university when school starts but until then i'd like to do some research on my own.

Re: damn careers

My economics teacher told me a couple semesters ago that there is a high demand for general mechanics who can work on hybrid type cars (prius and all that). Not too many shops (usually cheaper than dealer) can work on them yet and hybrid vehicles is a booming market. May be worth looking into.

Re: damn careers

What originally made you pursue an Electrical Engineer?

That is the sort of degree that could take you anywhere - it's an excellent place to start career wise.

I think you can easily find yourself a job in the automotive industry with an electrical engineering degree, or any engineering degree really.

Re: damn careers

haha i didn't really choose to pursue it. the reason i'm in it is because i was an idiot in high school and slacked off so i didn't get into mech lol..... and because i was an idiot last year and slacked off and didn't get the average to switch into mech.

I'm also not talking about doing manufacturing and that kind of thing, i want to be working on stuff like a car's suspension, engine, that kind of thing. i probably couldn't jump right in but i'd like to get an idea on how i could get into that kind of business.

Re: damn careers

I could be way off base as I know nothing of engineering but maybe this link might help a little, its a pretty good website. Ignore if not.

Re: damn careers

If you want to do automotive, i strongly suggest that you look into Mechanical Engineering. Its pretty general and has a LOT of career options (automotive included), and isn't as specialized as Electrical Engineering.

I too want to design cool things, automotive or otherwise, and I'm becomming a Mechanical Engineering.

In anycase, its not too late to make up your mind, and good luck with whatever you do.

Re: damn careers

yeah that's what i thought. i was just afraid that the automotive field was being taken over by automotive engineers (as in, the people who went to university for an "automotive engineering" program) and wasn't sure if mechs still got into it.
