1990 Suburban Engine

I have a 1990 Suburban with a bad engine (probably bad rod bearing or crankshaft bearing) and im looking to just replace the engine with a used one from a salvage yard or something. I'm looking for a 350 5.7 liter, Throttle Body Injected. Any suggestions on locating one? Also would it be possible to use a 350 engine block from an older engine and put the manifold for a throttle body injected engine on it, with all the fuel injection? Im looking at most likely a bad block, and maybe a head im not sure yet, but im just wondering what used parts i can find to get it running cheap. Thanks!

Why not just have your engine rebuilt?

Re: 1990 Suburban Engine

The intake bolt pattern on the TBI is different than 86 and earlier SBC. It is also different than LT1 or LSx engines.

TBI engines where used in 87 (or 88) thur 95 on all GM Full Size Trucks and SUVs; therefore, you should be able to find a used long block for your 90.

Re: 1990 Suburban Engine

So an 88' through a 95' should work? I have located a few used ones for around the $800 area also found one for $400 with $100 shipping. I live in idaho so theres not much here so far. As far as rebuilding it goes, how much would that cost? I'm guessing a pretty penny. It's not worth putting over $1,000 in, but if i could find a good running used engine for about $500 it would be fun to rip out the old and in with the new.

Re: 1990 Suburban Engine

I am trying to remember, but I think I paid about 1200 for a TOTAL rebuild 8 years ago. This was new pistons, rings, bearings, rebuilt heads, everything.

With a used engine.... you may make it another month and have the same problem.... just something to look out for.

Re: 1990 Suburban Engine

Another option is to buy a new replacement engine from any GM dealer. Runs about $1900.00, but get three year/36,000 mile warranty. You will also find anything bolted to the original engine will probably need replacing, like water pump, exhaust manifolds (use Edelbrock TES system--its cheaper than new exhaust manifolds from dealer), distributor, etc. $$$$$ !!! I had mine replaced at dealer (89 3/4 ton 4X4) with some other things and it drives like new! Have to keep it for awhile to make it pay back, though! Good luck!
