Smile Changing high-mount break light

Hi everyone,

Part of the high-mount break light is out. Is this something we can do ourselves, or do we have to take to the dealer, or other service center to have it done?

Many thanks! Narmeen

It depends on what is wrong with it and your particular skill level is. Hopefully it is just a burnt out bulb. If so you probably need to remove the rear door trim from the inside to get to it.

99 and up, we don't have to remove the complete rear trim; there is a small cover that can be remove in prying with a small screwdriver to have access to the 3 sockets that we have to twist to remove. The bulb number is 921. I suppose that a few are burnt out this is why she is talking about a part of the light that doesn't glow. I think the best way should be to change both of them, this is inexpensive

Re: Changing high-mount break light

Hi,

Yes, only part of the light is out. We will give it a try to change it -- I can pick up the bulb at Advance Auto Parts probably. I don't want to have to take it to the dealer if I don't have to. The manual offered no help in what to do other than to say to take it and have it done by a "professional". Thank you to all who have replied! I appreciate it!

Narm -

I recently replaced one of these bulbs in my 2000 Windstar. Yes, they're readily accessible through the little panel on the rear hatch. Not a difficult job.

I did end up visiting several auto parts stores to find the correct 921 bulb. It didn't seem to be well stocked in my area: In more than one case, I found the correctly-marked slot for the bulb on the retailer's shelves - but they were out.

Re: Changing high-mount break light

Thank you Phil! I will check it out today to see if I can get to the bulb and then head to the auto parts store. I will let everyone know how it goes!

Re: Changing high-mount break light

Hi! Well, I changed my two bulbs! I went to Advance Auto Parts and they had the bulb (in a 2 pack -- number 921LL -- the LL for long-lasting) and there is an access panel on the door to get to the lights. I just popped it out with a screwdriver and pulled out the two bulbs that were gone and replaced them! Very easy to do!

Now for the left front headlight -- I got that message when I got into the car this morning. I bought that bulb, but am having trouble removing those pins. I'll ask my husband to pull that one out and I'll change it.

Not very hard too. use your screwdriver to pull out (up) the 2 tabs at the rear of the headlamp. The headlamp will be loose, and move it from side to side and it will goes out from the front panel; disconnect the plug from the rear of the lamp, turn the ring to unlock the bulb then remove it from the headlamp assembly. Do not touch the glass of your new lamp
and if this happen clean it with alcool before installation. ( Bulb is 9007).
