Has anyone ever had this problem?

I recently bought a 91' 2500 that does not run. The guy I bought it from took a lot of parts off of the motor and admittedly got in over his head. He left the spark plugs out, the exhaust manifolds unbolted, the distributor out, and removed the throttle body. I thought about checking the motor out, doing a comression test and seeing if it ran. The only thing that worries me is that it has set for about a year without the spark plugs in it. I'm not talking about just slapping it together haphazardly, but I would like to know if it is fairly solid. Anything I am missing?
