94 camry - trans failure??

Trying to help my son diagnose his problem long distance & whether to tow it to his local mechanic, or transmission shop.
94 Camry / 4 cyl / automatic
While driving away from a light, he heard a loud clunk/bang - now engine revs freely and car won't move in any gear. Any chance this is something other than complete trans failure? Linkage / CV Joint / something else? Thx.

Re: 94 camry - trans failure??

If it's a CV joint, then it is very likely there may have been earlier symptoms of a failing joint such as clicking sounds during a turn. Ask him if he heard those things prior to the failure. As well, a failed CV joint will likely result in a torn boot and noise from the front end. Have him raise the front of the car or get the front inspected by a mechanic who I am sure would find this problem quickly. It sounds more like a failed trans though.
