GTO vs GTO (Jap vs US)....(sorta)

Well I was cruising home from a little get together at my girl's parents place for fathers day, just doin the speed limit. When a blue GTO, with the hood scoops, blows by me. Obviously he was starting shit, which I usually ignore, but i've been wanting to school one of these. So I punch it and start to catch up thinking he'll slow down and line up. No such luck, he keeps on flooring it, so I figure i'll just play catch up. Which I start to do, pulling him in slowly from 2nd gear, through 3rd catching up more and more. So now i'm up to about 110mph, time for 4th gear shift. Jam in the clutch, slam down the shifter, punch the gas and drop the clutch...."VVRROOOOOOOOOOM!!" I JERK forward in my seat HARD!! Slam the clutch back in as quick as possible and throw it in neutral...

me: "holy fuck"

girl: "wtf was that"

me: "that was a misshift to 2nd at 110 mph"

I look down, all the gauges in the dash are on, the headlights are dim. I blip the gas, nothing. Great, the engine is dead.

girl: "whats that mean"

me: "i think i just blew my engine"

girl: "omg"

So coasting at about 90, trying to think of what to do, I turn the key off and back on, nothing. Try turning the engine over, nothing.

me (thinking): "great I just shot my engine to about 15k rpms and seized it"

I finally coast down to a stoppable speed with no power assisted brakes, throw on the hazards, and pull off the side of the highway.

me (thinking): either the motor is seized, the heads are fucked, or the timing jumped...there's no way something isn't fucked.

I sit there contemplating for a couple seconds, and decide to call my buddy to come get us since I didn't want to try starting it back up and doing more damage.

For the first time since I misshifted, I let off the clutch. Then it hit me, that's why it wouldn't turn back on. I guess the shock of blowing my engine made me forget something simple like putting it in gear while rolling and letting out the clutch to keep it running.

I decide to try starting it....starts up, sounds a little rough, so I shut it back off within 1 second. Sit there, sit there, sit there...decide to try again...starts right up, no knocks, no ticks, no squeaks...give it some gas, normal. Run through the gears, all there, let out the clutch, grabs fine.

me (in shock): "guess the motor isn't blown, it seems fine...i cant believe nothing broke"

girl: "that was so scary"

me: "i dont know how nothing is broke...guess I hit the clutch in time"

So I pull back out on the highway (flooring it right off the bat), no problems, no CEL, everything is good

girl: "awwww...all i can think about is that fucker got away"

me: "lol i know i really wanted to race him, woulda been gto vs gto"

So I drove home, did a quick underhood check, everything is good.

I still can't believe nothing blew up, guess i'll be extra careful on that 3-4 shift next time...now I just gotta find that GTO again and finish this story!

tell me about it! it's scary how easy it was to put it in 2nd...just went straight down like normal, just like every other time, i don't know why it went to 2nd.

Oh I did, the whole time I was just waiting for some weird sound, smoke, smell, anything! But everything is fine!

Don't know how many of you are on 3si, but Michael B. (formerly AudibleSilence) did the same exact thing yesterday (misshift to 2nd), and he has a huge hole in the bellhousing now. I think he just let the clutch out and left it out though.

Well, assuming it's his girlfriend, I'm sure he's been lucky a few times... and if not, she would of been left at the curb.

Man you are lucky. I had nothing but bad experiences with my Stealth, and I babied that thing like crazy, just hoping that it would stay together.

Yeah I don't usually adhere to the babying a car method lol...I just take care of maintenance, drive it how I want, and fix whatever breaks (which hasn't been much).

Was just thinking, I may have gotten so lucky because the heads and everything in them only have about 25k on them (along with all 60k stuff).
