O2 Sensors in '87 GM
Is it a helpful idea to change the O2 Sensors even if I am not receiving any bad codes? They have been in for over 40,000 miles (the car only has about 111K, in total). I am usually a great believer in the theory that says "if it ain't broke don't fix it" but was wondering if I could beat some additional gas mileage out of it by doing so. Any other benefits?

Re: O2 Sensors in '87 GM
I would let them be since they are still working within specs (no engine light on).
If it does save you any fuel it wont be for long and not enough to cover the replacement cost. My 92 GM has over 200,000 miles on it and my o2's still work within specs and they have never been changed. In fact the car was e-tested just last friday and the car still runs way under smog limits. Re: O2 Sensors in '87 GM
If you start replacing stuff that don't need it, you will be broke in a hurry. Mine doesn't need a new transmission if you know what I mean.

Re: O2 Sensors in '87 GM
I hear you both LOUD AND CLEAR! I was just curious if it was worth the effort. I have a '93 GM that needs the gear sets for the odometer and trip odometer changed and I am NOT looking forward to that job! Found a place that has the sets for about $50 each (I'll find out if they take the same set) but hope the motor is ok! I guess that is one project I'll tackle when time permits.....MB
P.S. If anyone needs REALLY good instructions how to do this check out http://www.lincolnsonline.com and they have the info along with a link to the gear set company! |
