Exclamation Brakes + Streering jam while applying brakes!!!

Friends,

My car details are: 1999, Toyota Camry

Not sure whether this problem is specific to Toyota Camry only or a rare problem with almost cars.

Sometimes (once in fortnight/ or once in a month/ frequency is not specific) when I apply brakes in speed, it happens that my car's steering jams + brakes jams and the engine tends to shutdown. In such situation, I just need to turn off the engine and turn it on again. Then it becomes normal........ I tried to show it to Midas and Meineke, but no mechanic was able to detect the problem.

Is anyone in this forum ever faced such problem? If yes, what is the problem and what is the solution?

Looking for a solution.

Thanks!
Mohan

When you apply brakes it uses engine vacuum. I would look into integrity of vacuum hoses for starters.

After that check out ground connections.

Good luck!

I'll second that thought. Read through the 4 pages of this article: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/power-brake.htm

I was just thinking as I read this; is your car a manual transmission? If so, are you jamming on the brakes and forgetting to depress the clutch at the same time during these abrupt stops? This will kill the engine and cause the power steering pump to shut down and the steering wheel becomes very hard to turn. Just another thought to add to checking the engine vacuum.

Re: Brakes + Streering jam while applying brakes!!!

Hi Mike,

It is an auto-transmission engine car with power brakes + power steering.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the starting point for the troubleshooting. Till now, my mechanics were not able to understand what is going on. Everytime they used to say "when it happens again, bring the car to us that time" and moreover, after restarting the engine, the problem of hard brakes + jammed streeing goes away. So, there is no replication possible for this problem in my car.

I will visit Toyota dealer tomorrow or near future to get a check on "integrity of vaccum hoses for starters" and also to check "ground connection". Is there anything else I need them to check?

I still want to repeat here that it is not an everyday/everytime problem. It is happening once in a while. (but when it happens, I really get upset )

Also, please let me know if it is an expensive troubleshooting procedure....

Thanks again,
Mohan
