Re: Crazy Modeller F-50 PE Set

Who's to say? Until someone's really tried it, it's impossible to evaluate.

There is one and only one part on the entire set that I would say the Tamiya F50 needs- and that is the rear mesh grille (part 56). S27 also provides this part in their set, and it is horrible beyond simple description. It simply does not fit. (Yet apperently a modeler with the proper imbalance of talent, dedication, and mental illness can somehow make this part work. But I would bring the pets indoors for the night if such a modeler were seen in my neighborhood, and definately not have him over for beer and curry. )

Did crazy modeler do a better job? Someone would need to be willing to sacrifice a rear grille kit part, some significant time and effort, and be willing to part with a good deal of their sanity (or at least social life) to give it a try. Under the best of circumstances, this is not an easy surgery. If the etched part doesn't fit perfectly, it's truely a special joy to savor.

Crazy Modeler does put out good stuff, but there is an awful lot in this set that the Tamiya kit simply won't benefit from. If I were building an F50, I would use parts 56, 60 and 70 (if they FIT!)- although 60 and 70 could be replaced with simple nylon mesh. I might consider parts 38, 62 and 63- but there are other ways of doing these assemblies, and they are poorly visible when installed in the engine bay. The F50 does not show off its brakes well- so while the brake disc set could be cool, it would be something of a shame to hide them.

If you really enjoy playing with PE, you might have fun with it. But I fear Crazy Modeler has followed much the same road as S27, by filling their set with a great deal of stuff that's no better in etched metal than in injected plastic.

Feel free to take this all with a beaker of salt- I really make it no secret that I'm not a big fan of PE detail sets (especially for kits that I know don't need them). If part 56 does work (and you're willing/capable to do the surgery to install it), it could be usefull. Otherwise you money would be much better spent on Crazy Modeler's PE saws or sanding sticks.
