work question

So there's a lot of crap going on at work that everyone knows about but no one is going forward and getting anything done about it. Basically it comes down to drugs. I don't know from experience, but I've heard lots of rumors of people doing drugs, which I'm sure is against company policy. I don't have anything personal against most of these people, but at some point it's gotta be taken care of. There have been suggestions in the suggestion box to do random drug testing. Unfortunately the person/people who read the suggestions are supposedly doing drugs themselves. Basically, nothing's ever going to get done because the anonymous voice (suggestion box) is useless. Based on all the rumors, there could be a large number of firings if names ever got dropped. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I think action needs to be taken, but the loss of several employees could prove devastating toward getting any work done.

Re: work question

What drug(s)?

Is it happening AT work, or are staff coming to work already wasted? Individually or as a group?

Is it affecting morale and/or productivity?

Re: work question

Most likely, you may be directly affected by co workers who are under the influence, depending on the circumstances.

Do you want a spaced co- worker to be operating heavy equipment near you?

Do you want a bored toker to be calculating your paycheque?

Do you want someone's crackpipe to burn down your place of employment, putting you out of a job?

IMO drugs at work is like drinking and driving - it is unprofessional, probably hazardous and completely unacceptable.

Re: work question

It's not so much a problem at work, just knowledge of it. There are rumors that people leave work on lunch and come back high. Nobody wants to say anything about it. I don't work directly with these people, but someone has to! A few people were discussing this the other day and we figured that if they did drug tests, several employees would lose their jobs and that would be detrimental to the company because most of the people are dept. heads or high up people. I know the company has a zero-tolerance on violence, so it's likely the same with drugs. I can't prove anything so I'm not at a good point to say anything

thanks for the comments.

I'm not planning on saying anything at the moment, but I'll keep your ideas in mind. they are all valid points.

Re: work question

If they are leaving at lunch and driving, and you are fairly certain of this happening, an easy way is call the cops. Give them a plate number, tell them you suspect the driver is under the influence of something and its had an effect on his or her driving. That should solve the problem.

Re: work question

awesome. thanks. They leave every break and lunch and drive...somewhere. If it's true that they are doing something, you can't smell it on them when they return. Oh well. thanks all

Re: work question

Does your company have an "open door" policy where you can call higher up management? Check those employee bulletin boards where they list the state laws and stuff, usually theres a phone number there for anonymous tips.
