Rear main problem

ok so i think i got myself a bad rear main leak. About how much laybor time is it to fix it on a 91 camaro 305 rs 5speed? And i know it is a pain so do you think i should do it, or will it be better off having a shop do it?

Re: Rear main problem

Here in lies the problem, most shops charge book time. So if the book says it takes 3 hours to do the job, but a seasoned technician who knows the proper tricks, gets it done in 1 hour, you're still shelling out for the 3. Th'at's where shops make all their money. If you have a 2 piece seal, it can be done in car, but know that without a lift if can be a major pain in the a.... neck.

That would be the way to go but it is going to take a bit of time to do it because of what all has to come apart.

Re: Rear main problem

The time would be about the same for auto or manual since you have to remove the trans or move it aft far enough to remove the flexplate/flywheel. Then you look at the depth of the old seal in the housing, pry it out and install the new one to the same depth.
