Wait 2-hours to enter radio code - seriously?

New owner of my first Jeep, a MK2 GC 1997. New battery, and had to enter the code for the radio, which after three failed attempts (i now have the code!!) caused the prompt 'Wait 2-hours' which i am sure many of you are familiar with.

Fair enough i thought initially, but on further investigation it seems the radio/ignition has to actually be ON for 2-hours!! What a pain.

Short of disconnecting/reconnecting the battery is there any way round this?
