Stalling out

I just bought an 01 Cherokee with 74k miles. I have had it for about a month and put just over 1,000 miles on it.

The weather here in northern lower Michigan is just starting to get into the 80's during the day. Today as I was driving in town (25mph) I came to a stop sign and as I was coasting to it, the engine just died, quit running. I could still steer, so I moved to the shoulder, put it in park and it started right up.

Not five minutes later, it did the same thing again and again started right up. The tack reads about 500 to 600 rpm's when at a stop and idle.

I called my mechanic, who is also the guy who sold it to me, and he said there might be an issue with a leak in some vacuum hose? I am not a mechanic and this is my first Jeep, so this is all new to me.

My mechanic said continue to drive it and report back to him. It didn't stall after that.

Anyone have any idea what's going on? Any input is appreciated.

Re: Stalling out

Just a quick follow-up to my earlier post. I took the vehicle back to the mechanic/guy I bought it from. He drove it and of course it wouldn't stall for him. He said he even tried to make it stall (however you do that) and couldn't.

Since I got it back from him, it stalled on me again as I was approaching a stop sign. It seems to only stall when my foot is not on the gas and/or I am coasting.

I want to take this ride for a long drive but don't dare for fear it may die and not restart 100 miles away.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Stalling out

Check your battery for being at correct voltage and also cable connections for cleanliness.Check tightness of cooling fan belt also.

Re: Stalling out

Check your throttle plate gap. Also clean the gunk out of the throttle body.

Gap is .002 of an inch. Use a feeler gauge on the "up" side.
