429 Boss Mustang?

What is the story behind the 1969 429 Boss Mustang?
I've seen one at a local car show but haven't heard about them before.
Do they have hemi heads?
How many did they make?

I know you can find articles. I like to get input from enthusiasts as you can usually find out details from people who have experience that are not included in the articles.
That is why I posted those questions.

The 429 Boss was a racing version of the 385 series or Lima engine family. It had aluminum hemi type cylinder and some modifications were made to the block.

It was actually raced in the Torino Talladega and Cyclone Spoiler II but for street cars the engine was split from the car and offered in the Mustang.

Street versions of the Talladega recieved the 428 Cobra Jet like the '69 Torino Cobra while Spoiler IIs recieved the 351W-4V.

I have a Talladega I am currently restoring. Ts and IIs both recieved automatic transmissions while 429 Boss Mustangs recieved big input toploaders.

Shock towers were relocated to allow the big heads. Cars were made in low volume both '69 and '70. The "big" top loader was the trans of choice, but C-6 was an option. 9" rear, standard.

The combustion chamber is a "semi-hemi", in that it's not a true hemishere. But the plug is very close to the center of the chamber, making for good flame propegation.

A local racer that runs NHRA Regional, with a TA/FC, ran a "shotgun" (aftermarket nickname for Boss heads) engine into the 6.0s at over 250.

All-in-all, it was an interesting car, and a great engine. It never really "flowered" into the killer they (Ford) hoped it would be. there were about 10 of them at the Mustang's 40th Birthday Bash at Nashville in '04.

Simple. Too much money, too much power, bad timing (end of the "era"), Hemi...(in Cudas)

That's my opinion, anyway... Could be other factors.

Nope. "Flower". They simply never caught on. Good idea, bad execution. Ford was hopelessly "bigger is better" in those days, and we all know that isn't always true.
