shift lever

i called mitsu and i can not get this part by itself (shift lever). any idea where i could get it besides a junkyard? and also i have a vr4, could i pull this off a base model 3000 or stealth or does it have to be a vr4 or r/t tt?

Re: shift lever

ahh yes. the shifter arms on the outside of the transmission. someone was asking how to remove these on 3Si the other day. i don't see any way to remove them. if you look at the bottom of the pic (below), it appears that the shifter arms are part of the longer rod internal to the tranny. i'll do some searching on CAPS to see what i can find.

Re: shift lever

and here are the best pics i could find. they show in close up detail the entire rail. apparently, its called the 'interlock shift plate'. it basically moves the shift rails up and down, selecting different gears.

Re: shift lever

ok, so i searched through the service manual and CAPS. the shifter arm is part of the 'control shaft'. apparently, the arm is some how pressed onto the shaft, and is sold together with the shaft as a unit.

why do you need another shifter arm? it appears that you did the "short shifter mod" to yours by drilling a hole in the arm. even with that hole drilled, you should still be able to use it just fine. are you wanting to drill other holes?

Re: shift lever

this is not a pic of mine i found this pic. but long story short, i had to get a tranny rebuild (just spent 2k on tranny) and my gears still grind.

i thought (and heard from other owners and mechanics) that the grinding sound was the synchros. well this was not the problem because my mechanic said he replaced them.

by the way thanks for all the pics. so if your looking down into your engine bay you can see the shift lever, ok so where the shift lever meets the "control shaft" (you can see the top of the shaft on the shift lever) there is some play. my mechanic said this should not move at all and the even though it slightly moves thats what is causing my grinding.

i dont think he is lying cause he told me that he would pay for the part and do the labor for free. its just a matter of getting that part.

so im guessing i need to buy the control shaft and shift lever assembly. ok cool, you answered my question and ill talk to my mechanic and let him know.

anywhere i could find this? could i get this from the dealer?

thanks for the help

Re: shift lever

AWD trans parts, check out Kormex.

Screeech--> do the gears really grind, like when shifting, or do they whine like when you are in reverse and giving it gas? i have a theory.

Re: shift lever

the gears really grind.

say if the car is rolling anywhere above 3 mph, and i try to put it in first, it will grind.

switching from first to second gear grinds unless i double clutch

1. clutch in
2. switch from first to neutral
3. let off clutch
4. clutch in
5. switch to second gear

and it also grinds when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd.

switching to 3rd, 4th, 5th, or reverse it doesn't grind.

i would like to hear your theory.

do you not think its the shift lever and control shaft?
