Fucking Thieves...

So i have my old shitbox of a CRX project parked in the back of my school, by the autoshop, missing the motor. The door are unlocked since a while back i forgot my keys in my car but when i went back to get them, someone had beat me to them. I gotta get a new key made for the ignition and change the door locks. I'm also mounting the battery in the back and removing the negative wire every time i leave the car. ANYWAYS, so it was chilling in the back and i could tell people were going in it because the window was rolled down and my front THX logitech computer speakers i put in were missing. I didn't care i was like whatever... But today i went it to drop the D16z6 in and when i took a look inside, i noticed that those fuckers had broke off the 2 arms sticking out of the steering column which control the headlights/turn signals/windshield whipers etc... So now my question is this... Would a Civic steering column bolt up? Or an RSX one? Or anything other than a CRX? Also, does anyone have one for sale or know where i can get one? Thanks alot.

Re: Fucking Theives...

All you need is the column switch, pop the steering wheel off and its usually 4 bolts and some wires. And if you wanted to, while you were at it, if you wanted to get another ignition switch all together, that would be a great time to swap it out.

Re: Fucking Thieves...

The column switch is what your blinker/headlight/windshield wiper switches are considered. Some column switches are one piece, others are several pieces. They aren't that hard to replace, hardest thing is popping your steering wheel off sometimes.

I don't know what all steering column will interchange, but your looking at more work to replace the whole column, rather than just changing out the switch, or atleast I think so, I don't like being under the dash any more than I have to. If you want to change out your ignition switch while your at it, you will see 2 bolts on the column without any heads on them, you need to remove these to get the ignition switch off. This is where you need to get creative. You can use a cut off wheel if you can fit it in there to create slots on the bolts to use a flat head screwdriver, or you can take a hammer and a punch and knock a notch on one side of the bolt, once you get the notch in there, hit it at an angle until you get a good enough bite that it breaks it loose. I have found the closer to the edge you can do this, the easier it is. If you do it the second method, just break one loose and go to the other one, once both are broken loose, continue to take them out. If you remove one before the other, it will put too much pressure on the other one to break it loose...learned that the hard way.

Ofcourse, yes you could go get another steering column and replace the whole thing, but once again I don't like being under the dash any more than I have to. And it helps I used to remove those all the time so I have enough practice it don't take long to do it

Re: Fucking Thieves...

thanks alot for the replies. i already got the ignition switch off, i have a feeling it wasn't the stock one since it already has 2 notches cut into it and has some writing on it in marker. I'm gonna bring it to a key guy and get a new key made.

Re: Fucking Thieves...

Yep, most likely it had already been replaced with one from a salvage yard. We had to mark all of our parts at the one I worked at.
