Vacuum leak. Start at the port on top of the intake manifold and check all vacuum hoses. If this leads nowhere then try a compression check.

Re: 93 escort w 1.9 runs like crap

I have a 92 with the 1.9, a very similar layout. If there is Any leak in that large rubber tube from the air cleaner housing to the throttle body, it can cause the engine to run badly at low air-flow rates, such as idling. I dont know if the air temp sensor on the side of the air cleaner has any major effect, other than causing the 'check engine' light to be on if its not connected.
I suppose your fuel pressure is okay? We had to replace the idle air control valve on ours because it was sticking, and the engine rpm would 'hunt' updown/updown at an idle. Our throttle position sensor hasnt given us any trouble yet, but if it went bad it would most likely effect the engine running at an idle, more than any part throttle operation.
When you find out what it was, hope you will post the info - so we can all know what to do when it happens to us.
