Cool just a bit curious

i work at a car audio shop, we just had a 2007 or 2008 "new body style" 2500 HD in and I noticed the tail pipe of the exhaust just wacky. The first part tapers down kinda small and then another peice of pipe is over that but not sealed tight just held on by 3 rods so there a big open space around where the two pipes "meet" and then the back end up the pipe is flared out.

Us over here are just puzzled why there would be any need for this.
So if anyones knows that would be excellent thnaks

A picture would help here

It's probably just one of those high dollar but worthless aftermarket things

http://www.chevrolet.com/silverado/photogallery/
the last picture you can see how the tail pipe is flared on both ends what you can't really see is at the front side where the lighter silver stops thats where the other pipe goes in but with out making contact with it except via a few rods.

Go to your local chevy dealership and see if they have a 2500hd diesel, prolly also 3500 diesel, and look at the pipe the ish is wacked

Re: just a bit curious

You know I saw one of these on a new truck the other day and wondered WTF?
It looked bizarre, almost like some sort of noise cancel device or added device???
I know what your talking about though. Maybe it's just Chevy's way of making the tailpipe look "cool"

I just think Chevy got the whole Silverado WRONG this time. It looks stupid. I'm not in the market for a Dually but you get the idea with their HD line. Here is a comparison.

If I was shopping for a new truck I can tell your right now that it wouldn't be a Silverado. They just look all wrong to me. I'd probably go for the Sierra instead.

yea "WTF" was my exact thought. Glad some one else saw it so people don't think im crazy. yea i think chevy slacked off a bit on the 2007 line of trucks and suvs. They seem to be cheaply made. And the bumpers big but plastic and if they are chrome you got yourself some big mirrors to check out your shoes.

Re: just a bit curious

That's an easy one...as the air passes by the small tubing inside the larger one it picks up speed and helps pull the exhaust out of the tailpipe. It helps exhaust the exhaust :-)

You have nailed it.
It is used on some newer ones and some diesel exhaust systems to help get the exhaust out.
If it is removed on the ones that have it OEM they will run like crap without it.

I can not explain just how it works but.
If it is removed it will not run right.

Re: just a bit curious

The 07 and newer diesels are now required by law to run Ultra Low Sulfer Diesel (ULSD) have a particulate filter installed in the exhaust system. The filter traps particulate matter in an effort to lower this type of emmisions. Every 30,000 miles or so, whenever the filter is full/dirty, the system automatically regenerates the filter by increasing the exhaust temperature to burn off the trapped particulate matter. The shape of the exhaust is designed to cool the regen process. Modification of the system may violate these laws, so check before you do any work on the exhaust system.
