88 Camry automatic shoulder belt
Driver's side automatic shoulder belt doesn't move up across the top of the window like it should! What's wrong? All other systems go!

Re: 88 Camry automatic shoulder belt
Welcome to the forum. I've never had to mess with it. Check the Factory Service Manuals thread at the top of the forum for your model years manual. Look through the FAQs also at the top of the forum.
Just shooting from the hip, I'd say check the door closed switch on the frame of the door. I think that's what tells it to move.

Re: 88 Camry automatic shoulder belt
It may not be the switch. You can tell if the cabin light or "door open" warning light is on after you close the door.
The most common cause of this problem is the stress on the wires at the door hinge area that fatigues and causes wire to break. Since the driver door got open/close much more than passenger door, this problem always happen on the driver side. To fix it, it's painful, to be honest with you. You have to take off the door panel and trace & test the wires. It could take couple hours. A wiring diagram will be your best friend. Good luck. |

Re: 88 Camry automatic shoulder belt
I just fixed this problem on my '90 Camry. After pulling out and replacing the old belt mechanism, checking for fuses, etc., I found the problem to be broken wires in the harness between the door and frame. Cut open the black bellows cover, and likely you will find several wires broken.
Never mind which is which...just connect like colored wires. I used crimp connectors from Advance Auto, but had to solder one wire as it broke off too short. I'm not sure how long this fix will last, but my Camry has 220,000 on it anyway. I bought a used harness just in case, but haven't bothered installing it until I need it. If you want a more permanent repair, you might just replace that harness...didn't look too easy to me, though. To be safe, I am not opening the driver door fully wide anymore, as this stresses the wires.
