really need help

i have got a 88 mr2 from my friend and it needs a lot of work and i dont know where to begin. when the car turns on it has a hard time ideling and its bad. when i hit the gas the car dosent respond for a good second or two. idk what to do first the car had got new spark plugs and wiers and starter. it starts right up but it wont saty on if you give it to much gas what might be the problem
