Help with EGR Question

1994 Ranger
2.3L 5-speed
125K miles (bought used about two years ago)

Several months ago my Ranger began running slightly rough. It behaved like a small vacuum line was off, but I could never find one loose or disconnected. Since it ran fairly smooth unless I had it under-geared, I just ignored it. About 2 weeks ago it got worse and I was experiencing some sputtering and cutting out under acceleration. Finally, it has gotten to the point where it runs too rough to drive, sputters and makes an intermittent 'pop' from the exhaust -- kinda like a backfire (but not that loud). The CE light is on, and has been since before this happened.

What I've already done:

1) Replaced a hose from the manifold to the silver box on the passenger firewall. It was found to be brittle and cracked off.

2) Replaced Fuel Filter.

3) Checked for vacuum leaks (visually and with spray) - none found.

4) Finally got a code reader and pulled the code (only one). It was 335 - which is an incorrect voltage on the EGR sensor circuit.

5) Recently it passed an emissions test so I assume the CAT is ok.

Since the code says EGR, I just want to know if a bad EGR / EGR Sensor could be causing this behavior.

Any help or advice would be appreciated - this is my work truck and I need it badly!

Thanks,

Mac

Re: Help with EGR Question

OK - I replaced the EGR sensor and that fixed the 335 code, but it still runs like crap. I did an "Engine running" test and got a 998 (failure mode?) followed by 224 (which says: SPOUT circuit ground/coil 1,2,3 or 4).

Any ideas?

Re: Help with EGR Question

OK - The problem was the ICM (ignition control module). I replaced it and the truck runs better than ever. It wasn't that difficult to change out, but that third bolt (closest to the block) was a real bear.
