Need some help

I have a 1999 Intrigue with 156000 miles. Recently my rpms have increased about 800 when I am going 50 mph or more. It seems to be shifting fine, however when you take your foot off the gas the rpm's drop to under 1000. The service engie light has been on and off though this, codes are mis fireing and bad o2 sensor. Could the o2 sensor be causing this problem?

Re: Need some help

That actually sounds more like a TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) issue.

The TCC "locks up" at cruising speeds, and usually tries to do so at about 50 or higher. It almost acts like a 5th gear for your 4 speed transmission.

How many RPMS are you turning at 70mph with the gear selector in the "D" position.

The RPMs are supposed to drop when you let off the gas, ive never noticed just how far mine dip down, but Im sure they go down to around idle speed, probably even less while braking.

What are the exact codes you are getting, has it been scanned since this new RPM problem?

Re: Need some help

Sorry for the delay. At 70 mph the rpm's are 3000. I do not have the code number but it was saying the mass air sensor this time.

Re: Need some help

I think you have a definite transmission issue of some sort. I would guess the TCC like I mentioned earlier. Either that or you no longer have 4th gear.

Cruising at 70mph your RPMs should be right around 2000.

3000 would be a figure achieved either by not locking in the TCC or by staying in 3rd gear.

Im not entirely sure what to suggest you do. Most of the TCC codes usually trigger a check engine light, and you can read the codes with any standard reader.

There are also transmission codes that can only be read by a high end scanner, or by the dealership, much likes ABS codes.

You might try calling or stopping by the dealership, tell them your situation and see how willing they are to help you out, or see if they can put you in the right direction.

I dont see how a problem with the MAF sensor could cause the problem you have described.

Just out of curiousity, where are you located? One of these days Im going to stumble on a nearby member. Lets see if today is that day.

Re: Need some help

toad64: You'll have better luck getting answers if you start a brand new post describing your problem. Also include the year of your Intrigue, engine and miles. The folks on this forum are very helpful and will try their best to get a solution.
