2000 Taurus lost key

I have lost my only key to my 2000 Taurus, actually my daughter did...I went to the dealer today and was given 2 new keys using the VIN number... I was told that it did not have a chip in the key...guess what...?...it didn't work...I called another dealer and they said that it did have to be a key with the chip in it...I have the remote...at least she did not loose that too...I was told it would be $28 dollars for the key and $82 dollars for the reprogramming...plus a tow to the dealership...good grief...!...I have a spare key with no chip that opens the door and will turn the ignition...but does not start the car...please help me with any suggestions...is there another source that I can use...can the system that uses the transponder deal be diabled somehow...?

Re: 2000 Taurus lost key

I'm not too familiar with the pats system ,but I think that the dealer has to perform some type of security access procedure to reprogram the new keys if you don't have any originals.. using their diagnostic machine.. I don't know about disabling this system, it's part of the pcm programming.. I can stand corrected though, others may have the skinny..

It won't cost anything but time to call around to some of the locksmiths in your area to see if they can make a house call and program new keys to your car to replace the last lost transponder key.

I know in my area there is at least one mobile guy who can do it. He services a few of the used car lots that only received one programmed key, etc. Actually, that's another option. If you don't find somebody in the phone book, check with some of the used car lots.

Be sure to get three keys made (or two and buy a spare off of eBay) and get them all programmed. I believe your 2000 is still they type that requires at least two programmed keys to reprogram more. That way, as soon as your daughter loses one key, you can purchase another spare and program it (along with the keys you still have) on your own.

I found a locksmith here in town who said he could make 2 keys and program them for $120...that will be less thatn the dealer quoted me, without having to go for a tow... thanks for your help. I plan on getting a third key made as well

Re: 2000 Taurus lost key

The problem with the PATS system is you have to have both keys to reprogram it.

Yep, if you didn't already, make sure the locksmith understands that you do not currently have any programmed keys for your car. He will need to be able to get into the PATS system with the tool rather than just using the ignition switch method to program the two new keys.
