98 GC Laredo rear end noise
I have searched forum and read much of all the issues with the jeep gc rear ends. 4.0 l motor, have had the hum from rear end for about a year now. Today driving about 30 mph went around a left corner and heard a squeak, squeak, squeak, coming from rear end. Sounded like coat hanger caught in the rear brakes. Tapping brakes did not effect sound. A mile up the road turned right and noise went completely away. Any ideas? Seems as though something shifted and then shifted back. First day off I will pull cover for inspection and fluid change (original fluid). How can i tell if this is a limited slip or not so i know to put in gear oil additive.

Re: 98 GC Laredo rear end noise
Hi,
I also have a GC laredo, it has 127,000 miles on it and just a couple months ago I noticed the grinding noise in the backend had gotten worse. I brought it to the dealer and they said that my rear end bearings were shot. Second opinion & 3rd opinion told me the same thing. I ended up having a guy that specializes in rear ends do the work and when he took the wheel bearings, differential bearings and pinion bearings out of the back they crumbled in his hand (he showed me the pieces of them and they were still all over the floor when I went there) He replaced all of the bearings and it is a very quiet ride now. And I am $700.00 poorer!!! |
