Fuel Gauge Zero Scale 98GT
Gents,
New user, My 98 GT fuel gauge has been staying on E for quite awhile now, ocassonally it swings up but then drops again. From previous posts I can see that a shorted wire or slide causes full scale readings, would I be correct in saying that an open would cause zero scale. If so has anyone had this problem before? Thanks, TK |

Re: Fuel Gauge Zero Scale 98GT
Welcome to AF.
Yup, sounds right to me. Based on your symptoms the most common problem is the fuel level sending unit and float which is part of the fuel pump assembly. It can be replaced separately at a lower cost without having to replace the complete fuel pump pod. About a 1 hour DIY job. Access cover is in the trunk behind the rear passenger seat. See pic below. ![]()

Thanks for the reply,
Sounds like you need to be one of those double jointed fellows to get into the access hatch. I'll give it a shot. |

Wow, that is ironic! I came to this site today specifically looking for info on this same topic! Getting tired of not having a working guage and worrying about my kids running out of gas at midnight in the middle of nowhere! Mine will go all the way to full when I tank up, but once it starts to go down it will be all over the place. The low fuel light will even come on and guage will read E even when I am over half full sometimes...
That is good news bnaylor, thanks for the info on that. So judging from that picture of the unit in your post, you did this youself? How much did the sending unit cost? And last but not least, what kind of dirt bike is attached to that knobby tire in the picture?!
