99 Grand Am won't start

Hi there,

I have a 99 Grand Am Gt with no previous starting issues.
When you try to start the car it just clicks. Then if you stop trying to crank it all the lights will flash, almost strobe until you turn the ignition to "off". Sometimes even with the igniton in the off postion it will continue to flash the lights including the headlights.

The battery is fully charged the cables are in good repair and tight, and I checked all the fuses that I know of in the side panels and under the hood.

Any assitance would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Re: 99 Grand Am won't start

Just a quick update, now when you put the key in and turn the ignition to on postion the all the lights strobe and the bell chimes untill you remove the key. Also, after you try to crank it there is a faint smell of sulfur, or something like it. Could it be the BCM the ignition, or something totally different?

Welcome to AF.

If all the connections and battery is good then I would assume it could be the ignition switch or the bcm.

It might help to scan for trouble codes too.

Re: 99 Grand Am won't start

Thank you for the welcome, great site you all have.

Is there any way to test the BCM, or the ignition to start ruling things out?
Or, am I better off just taking it to the shop.

Re: 99 Grand Am won't start

Sorry for the delay on the reply.

The BCM can through a code but it takes a pretty good scan tool to read them, like a GM Tech II .

Though I would say your symptoms do reflect that of a failing ignition switch.

I'll see if I can get a test procedure going for this switch!

Also, you have checked your fuses ???
The ignition fuse in the under hood fuse box specificly.

Thanks for the reply. I did check all the fuses, I'll check back when I figure something out.
