Problems with car still rolling when in gear

Hey everyone,

I have an 88 mustang GT and just noticed a problem last night with my car parking on a slope, it still moves when the manual transmission is left in gear. It does not matter which gear, 1st through 5th and reverse.

This is the first time I have noticed the car do this on a slope, it just keeps rolling and rolling.

Is this due to a slipping clutch or could it be poor compression in the engine that allows it to rotate the engine easily?

In regards to the clutch possibly slipping, I have not noticed any indications that it could be worn. The car still pulls very hard in any gear and their is no noticable slipping. (I have had a worn clutch before and Im positive this one is not, plus my previous worn clutch still stopped a car on a slope) The clutch is a centerforce dual friction, maybe 1.5 years old with very few miles on it matted to a Fidanza alluminum flywheel.

My only other thought is that the engine is rotating easily for some reason, poor compression is my only thought? Worn piston rings possibly? I havent noticed it burning any oil though. I dont have a compression tester unfortunatly, although I have not noticed any performance issues.

When the car does roll, there is some resistance, its almost like you have light pressure applied to the brakes.

I cant really think of anything else that could be an issue, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Matt

UPDATE

I just went out to investigate the problem further. It does not appear to be the clutch because when the car is rolling while in gear the engine is rotating as I can see it spinning the belt assembly. So the clutch is holding fine.

Does this boil it down to the poor compression theory? If not what else would cause this?

Matt

Re: Problems with car still rolling when in gear

Your trans is not suppose to hold your car while parking. It will provide resistance, but that is not what its intended for. Do you use your E-Brake in conjuction with it placed in gear?
