starter flatspot?

ok so i was out the other day, and a friend was driving the stealth, we went to the local food mart and turned the car off. about 5mins later we came out and the car wouldnt start. we tried 2 or 3 more time's. then i said we could just try and bump start it. i tried both 1st and 2nd gear bumps, to avail. so then i noticed that the break was getting really hard to press down so i said lets just push it into a spot.
i waited about a minute then pressed the clutch and brake(by now it was really difficult) and it turned over. now me not having a lisence for now, he got in and started backing out, and wat do u know, he stalled. then he tried to start it again, but it didnt turn over. so i got in and tried, no go. then i pressed the brake several time's and then the clutch and it went.
my 2 questions are; is this a flatspot in the starter? if so then y does it start wen the brakes are pressed, is there a connectin electrically between the two?

Re: starter flatspot?

flat spot on the starter? do you mean a flat spot on the gear, like its missing a few teeth?

the reason the brake becomes harder to push with the car off is b/c there is no vacuum to assist in breaking. there is no vacuum b/c the engine is off. the vacuum source for the brake booster is the upper intake plenum.

when you say "the car didn't start", please be more specific. when you turn the key in the ignition: did it turn over but not start? click but not turn over? nothing at all?

not sure why pressing the brake helped it to start. did you think about getting a jump?

Re: starter flatspot?

battery is a wk old, i didnt think about a jump.
all that happens wen i turn the key, is electric will work but that's it,m no turn over or nething from the engine
i just thought it was wierd that the car would always start if the brake was hard to press
