2000 Jimmy died and wont restart

My 2000 Jimmy dies on me last week on the highway as i slowed down to exit it would not accelerate and when i pulled over it died and my volatge dropped. It would not turn over ( not enough voltage) Came back to Jump it half hour later and tried to start it with out jumping just for kicks and it started. Ran fine for about 10 miles then dies again ( voltage drop off ). Waited half hour and it started back up. I was told the battery and alternator were fine but the cadalitic converter was plugged and was draining the voltage faster than alternator could keep up.
replaed caddy and ran gread for a few days, Then died once more....Waited and it restarted. About 2 mile down the road it wouldnt accelerate and then it came back fine and 2 more mile down the road it died. this time after waiting it didnt restart, tried jumping it no luck.

So here i have replaced fule pump, alternator, battery and caddy in last year.....any suggestions as to what might be causing this and what i need to do to get my car running again....

Thanks

Well for one thing, I'd stop throwing money and parts at this problem until you get codes or some other diagnosis. If you get it running again, take it to Autozone or somewhere that has an OBDII scanner and see if you can retrieve any codes. Most places will do this check for free. Get the code numbers and come back here and post them.

Re: 2000 Jimmy died and wont restart

The alternator, fuel pump and battery were all bad and needed replaced and i Did take it to auto zone after i got it started the first time and it came up with a code for the O2 Sensor past the caddy, and i was told this was because the caddy was plugged. Would just a bad 02 sensor cause the problems im having?

Clear codes and drive it. And see if it returns.
What was the code no?

By the sound of it, it sounds like your alt stopped charging your battery.

To verify this, either charge your current battery (plates could also be dead) or pull a battery from another car and see if your truck starts. If it does, your battery isn't charging from the alt which means that your volt regulator is dead which means since it's internal you need to swap the alt.

If the alt. is bad should the car start with a jump? Because it wont start with jump either....Coincidently the weather was very hot on both days it acted up on me.....would that mean anything?

Re: 2000 Jimmy died and wont restart

After some research Im going to try and replace the ignition module and see if that does it, when we unplugged the sensor the engine quite and the voltage dropped which is what it had been doing to me on hot days.

Re: 2000 Jimmy died and wont restart

Does the truck turn over and not start now? Does everything work on the dash as you turn the key? If alternator was bad, the truck would still start with a good battery and run for awhile. The ignition module would not stop the engine from turning over, it just wouldn't start. So if its not turning over, its not the ignition module. If its turning over and you think ignition module, check for spark, pull a plug wire and take a look. If your getting spark, your module is alright at this point.

If you do suspect the ignition module, you should be able to get the old one tested at one of your local parts stores. Ign. Mod's aren't cheap. Once you walk out of the parts store with a new one, it's yours, you most likely will not get a refund. Make sure the old one is bad before spending the money on a guess.

Re: 2000 Jimmy died and wont restart

Start investigating the possibility of a failing ignition switch OR multifunction switch. I've seen both go intermittent and prevent starting while allowing normal cranking (both on 2000 Jimmy/Blazer).

This one wasn't so much the switch, but the harness in the column. Unfortunately, the harness is part of the switch:

Actually, I think that second one was a '97 or '98. I don't have a photo of the red 2000 that dies from an intermittent switch (which makes three that I've done myself). .
