92 Lumina 3.1L starts and drives but sputters/dies intermittently

symptoms are: starts and drives every time hot or cold but

sputters/dies intermittently while driving. toward warmup sputter

seems to worsen as opererting temperature is reached.

Additionally, seems to sputter/die only in gear, not in park at

idle.

additional info: has 226k miles. have replaced (over the years of

ownership) ECM, CPS, computer module and most recently plugs.

any troublshooting ideas would be appreciated.

Re: 92 Lumina 3.1L starts and drives but sputters/dies intermittently

welcome to AF Buzz. There are quite a few things that can cause what you describe.

IF it stalls mostly as you come to a stop, it could be a stuck torque converter lock-up solenoid that's not unlocking the converter as you slow down. It would buck and studder just before stalling if this was the case (like coming to a stop in a stick shift car without taking it out of gear or pushing in the clutch pedal).

If it randomly dies while driving, you need to check to see if you have spark and/or proper fuel pressure when it dies.

Lack of proper fuel pressure (41-47 psi key on/engine off) could be a bad fuel pump, clogged filter, or a bad fuel pressure regulator.

Lack of spark could be a bad crank position sensor, ignition module or ECM, or the wiring to any of them.

While awaiting fuel pressure gauge to arrive removed IAC and EGR valve, cleaned and installed. both looked in good condition. No change in symptoms. Will install fuel filter while waiting for fuel tool.

Checked fuel pressure at rail... steady 40psi. Can anyone tell me if this confirms fuel pump and FPRegulator are functional?
