looking at a 2001 Maxima

Looking for a car and seen a dealer selling a 2001 Maxima. Has 69,000 miles. They are asking $13,495.

Is it worth looking into? Are Maxima's reliable or do they regularly stay in the shop?

Re: looking at a 2001 Maxima

My experience would force me to tell you to stay away. Here is a list of problems so far owning a 2001 Maxima SE with 55K on it when we bought it:

1. Bank 1 pre-catylatic converter. $1000 through Nissan (luckily covered under california emissions warranty)
2. Drivers rear brake caiper locked up solid
3. Bank 1 sensor 2 oxygen sensor. Would have been $620 through Nissan. $100 to fix it myself with help from this message board
4. Latest problem with a P0174 CEL code, not sure what the problem is. It reads "Bank 2 lean" and not sure what causes that to come in.

The car now has 88K on it and I think this is a little excessive for the nameplate with such a good reputation "Nissan" I will not own another Nissan. And my list excludes all normal wear and tear items like brakes, oil changes, ect.. Take your $$ and buy a Honda or Toyota

Also forgot to mention that price seems high. Mine is only worth 10K on kelly's blue book.

Re: looking at a 2001 Maxima

Sounds like that guy ^ had some bad experiences with his, most likely because the previous owner didn't take care of it and his problems could happen on just about any car you buy. They are not nissan spicific. Any car is going to have matinence.

Maximas are amazing strong cars. Mine has 150000 miles on it'st still going strong with lots of power. I would recomend a maxima to anyone. They cost a little more but hold their value in the end. I've never had it in the shop nor have I had any major repairs done to it. These cars are far superior to hondas and toyotas. I will never go back to anything else.

Check NADA for the price and hold to it. KBB often times will overprice a car. Dealers will give you trade in nada value and try to sell you at KBB.

Re: looking at a 2001 Maxima

At least brake cylinders become rusted -onlyif- neglected. No exceptions... see http://www.cardomain.com/ride/748507/18
Fluids have to be changed every 2-3yrs, depending usage/storage, does not depend on chrome letters in trunk lid.

My 2k2 max works without any glitch. 3gen -93 needed 'some' tunin... three yrs ago.

Only way is to Check out its History.
