Are swear words needed in our language?

I think so.

But what are your thoughts on the use of swear words in our society? Do you believe that these words have a purpose, or are useful in language?

Hell yeah, man! How else do stupid people (ie. my boss) express themselves when they are mad?

So the biblical scholars mis-translated the Hebrew word for "young woman" into the Greek word for "virgin," which was a pretty easy mistake to make, since there is only a subtle difference in the spelling. But back then it was the "virgin" that caught people's attention. It's not every day a virgin conceives and bears a son. So you keep that for a couple of hundred years, and the nexy thing you know, you have the Roman Catholic church.

They are in the Oxford Dictionary- and they are a common feature of the English language- so yes they are

If you could remove every swear word from common usage, some people would be lost for words.Others, granted, could be just as inflammatory and offensive with a few well chosen phrases, but on the whole most of us would take a while to adjust.Swearing is not particularly neccesary, provided you know how to express yourself effectively in other ways.

Yes, they are an affective way of expressing strong emotion. However, they do not need to be used anywhere near as much as they are now.

this whole P-man avatar this is confusing me. I thought Moss was Jay, and then I saw his username, and then the next post I thought it was just Moss posting twice and then it was Mr. T. Blah

I hardly ever used swear words in my normal everyday conversations.....b4 joining where I work......

that was a fuckin mistake, as now I use them all over fuckin the place....and even sometimes feel embarrased when talkin to buddies from college etc who are shocked at the amount of bad language I have come to use........

though outside of work I try mt best to avoid using many swear words

Funny thing is, I rarely (if ever) use swear words. In all honesty, the ONLY time I swear is when in bed with Ms-whoever-I-hooked-up-with-that-night.

In everyday conversation, I tend to use substitute words for swear words. For example:

"I don't give a flying FLOCK about this thread"

or
"I'm beating the living SugarHoneyIcedTea out of whoever started this FARGIN' thread"

or
"Whoever started this thread can kiss my ASSociated press release"

(see a trend here??)

The only reason they became a swear word is because they reference either anger or violate a puritan value.

to add appropriate emphasis then yes swear words are needed. Take the following into account.

"get away from the car!"
"get the fuck away from the car!"

the second has alot more of an affect
