89 bronco steering

My 890 bronco seems to have a wondering affect going down the road. The steering seems to be loose and the front end wonders around and almost seems like it has a mind of its own. Any ideas what it could be or is there something that i can adjust in the steering to correct it . Also anyone know were the sensor for the temp gauge would be, mine quit working...Thanks Buck

Re: 89 bronco steering

You probably have a pump going bad.* Does it make noise yet? Turn your wheel over until the stop and see if the pump howls. (Engine running, 'natch.)

I'm pretty sure the temp sensor is around the thermo (it has a different housing, 'natch.) I'll double check and see. Sorry, it's teh one on the intake manifold, between the #6+7 cylinders.

* Of course, you can wander over tire pressure, inner/outer tie rod ends, knuckle joints, springs, shocks, brakes, steering column, road, etc. It is important to 'feel' where problem is to begin a diagnosis. Other than that, you could just go down the list and check everything. In this situation, I'd probably check the tires, jack it up and check the tie rods, check the brakes, Inspect the springs, grease the king pins (do this weekly!, Then I'd set it back down, and look in the bay at the PS fluid, belt, and the connections for the wheel. From the inside, check the ig switch by rolling the key in the cylinder, and then locking/unlocking the wheel. Then test the pump, and see if the in-bay connections going into the pump are out-of-round by steering, also. (You may notice a dozen little problems, or some things that are in better shape. In anyway, you'll know what's going on down there.)
