camaro problem

I have a '92 camaro 5-speed w/305. While the engine is running, it rev up and down almost stalling. When I press the accelerator, it does not rev like normal (sputtering) and the surging continues like I am not pressing the accelerator. I have to nurse (play w/ clutch and accelerator) the car to get it to moving. When it is moving it has no power and continue to sputter and hesitate. Does this sound like a faulty fuel pump? Please help!!!

Sounds like it could be a low pressure or volume issue. Installing a gauge and check will confirm.


BTW- TPI or TBI?

It's a throttle body (TBI). If the volume and pressure is determine to be low - fuel pump problem or what?

Sounds like fuel pump to me. Change the filter just to make sure its not clogged before you go and spend the money on a pump.

What is a throttle position sensor? Someone suggested that might have failed.

my car did the same when I bought it. (mine was really a piece of crap when i bought it, so kinda apples and oranges here)

I replaced the ECU and fuel pump + filter. Can't remember 100%, but I think that particular problem went away after the new ECU. (It already had a new TPS).

You problem could be a lot of things (only a few of which are cheap replacement parts). Start with the simple stuff and try to narrow it down.

(in order of cost effectiveness and simplicity)
check timing
reset computer (disconnect battery for 5 min)
replace fuel filter
have muffler shop check for clogged cat converter
get fuel pressure gauge (for fuel injection), ensure proper reading
(acceptable pressure for TBI is....? 25-30psi? someone clarify that)
replace TPS
get a diag check done on the computer.

...by now you should know the source of the problem...or have a good idea... and know what to spend the big bucks on.

have you tried letting the car reach a warm temperature first?

mine only ran like that when it was cold... which helped us find a bad computer and failing O2 sensor.

EDIT: Oh, and the TPS, throttle position sensor, tells the computer when you press on the gas... so it will add more fuel to the engine. if bad senor, it doesnt add enough fuel = engine wanting to cut out.

sounds like a misfire, possible multiple misses, you'd need an hei spark tester to see tho. you'd hafta pull the fuel pump fuse which is by the battery on the right side fenderwall, then connect the tester to each plug wire one by one and crank it over and watch for spark, also use it on the wire for the coil to see if the spark from the coil is strong enuff.
