97 LeSabre EGR problem
Good morning,
Have diagnosed a bad EGR for the 97 LeSabre; the schematic shows a "motor" of sorts to operate the valve with a potentiometer feedback. My question before I take it off, is "How does the motor work? Is it a solenoid of some sort with a sprivg return, or is it really a stepping motor of some sort?" I'd like to repair it if possible, or if not replace it. Thanks in advance, Jack C. |

Re: 97 LeSabre EGR problem
Just checked the unit; it is a solenoid operated device with a simple vee type
plunger valve opened by the solenoid armature motion. The coil resistnce is 8.3 ohms, the feedback pot has an overall resistance of about 3.77K ohms, the wiper resistance to one end varies from 1.15 K ohms to 4K ohms. Measuring from the other end, resistance varies from 3.46K to 400 ohms. Couldn't find the plunger sticking, and the pot seemed smooth in traveling from end to end. Also made sure the female connector pins were tight against the pins of the EGR. Have to retry this unit and see just what went wrong. Jack C. |

Re: 97 LeSabre EGR problem
I take it this is the linear type egr valve with a five pin connector. What indicated that the egr was the problem? Was it a set code? Which one? How did you check the egr pot? I just asking because those resistance readings don't look right and I'd like to get an idea of your thought process. Also, you checked the egr pipes for blockage, right?
Thanks

Re: 97 LeSabre EGR problem
From my experience with my '95 Saturn, that GM's EGR valves are very durable, with the usual problem being that they get slightly carboned up. With that said, a good cleaning, with particular attention being directed to the base [ pintle base ] usually is all that is necessary.
BTW, the 'pintle' is what is lifted up and closed during it's operation
