Unhappy 2000 Silhouette abs/traction lights on

Ok. We just got the van back from the transmission place after getting the transmission fixed, the power steering, the rear seal replaced, and tie rods (did I spell that right?) replaced.

Now we have the ABS dash light on and the traction is off. The van is out of alignment (because of all the work done) and the front tires need replaced.

The ABS light and traction were not on before we got all the above items fixed. We are taking it to Firestone tomorrow to have them check out exactly why - and the CCL code (I think that is right) that is coming up on the computer.

I have been trying to do my homework to figure out why the ABS/traction thing is happening - before I go tomorrow. Any ideas? They checked the connections.

We just dumped so much money into it - we just can't do more right now. The fuel gauge is just gonna have to wait a few more months.

Would appreciate any feedback...

Re: 2000 Silhouette abs/traction lights on

I had a similar problem with my 2000 Silhouette. In my case it was caused by low brake fluid. Once I topped it off, the abs/traction lights turned off. You will have to talk to GM on why the lights come on for low brake fluid. I did confirm the solution with a GM dealer. They indicated it could also mean that your brake pads are getting close to replacement time.

I too had the same problems as above. Look at posts 2-10-05 and 11-12-06 about melted grd. pin in left rear tail light. That was exactly my problems. The tail light assm'y snaps apart with a little prying and release of the plastic clips. I was able to clean and reuse the pin and connector. This forum is a MONEY saver. By the way that grd. point is last in the acc'y. line per my shop manual. Looks like it can cause all kinds of missing ground problems.

I had a problem also with my abs/trac light a few years ago and the problem disappeared when I replaced the circuit boards (also referred to as "boards" )which house the rear bulbs. There is a problem with these van where the area is not properly sealed around the taillights and water gets in and causes problems. You can take them apart and repair them or you can now buy replacement boards on eBay much cheaper than they could have been purchased just a few years ago at the stealership part's dept. Here is a link to an auction on eBay for these boards:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHEVY...QQcmdZViewItem
Whether you go the route of fixing it yourself or buying new ones a good thing to do is to apply a little di-electric grease in the sockets before you install the bulbs to help seal out any moisture.

Re: 2000 Silhouette abs/traction lights on

I have a 98 Silhouette extended cab and Few weeks ago after I had driven the van in the rain I left it and 4-5 hours later when I sat in the vehicle again the smell of burned plastic was so strong that I had to air out the vehicle before driving it. The smell kept coming back once in a while.I never found out what caused the smell but recently the ABS and TCS lights started coming on. I checked both taillights as suggested here but both look fine. I read something about a break switch but have no idea where that switch is located so I can check if it is OK. Could anyone tell me where to look for that brake switch !
Also in July I had the engine redone if that makes any difference diagnosing the problem.

Thanks in advance

Re: 2000 Silhouette abs/traction lights on

Welcome to AF. This thread is too old, next time look at the dates and start a new one, thanks. Any ABS issue requires a scan with an abs function scanner to access codes as the first diagnostic step.
