97 1500, sometimes won't start with key..
Sometimes my truck will not start if i use the key, but if I use the remote start, it starts everytime..so does that mean I have a problem with the Ignition Switch or with the Lock Cylinder? sometimes if I move the column, it'll start, or atleast, i think that's what makes it able to start...any help is greatly appericated...

Re: 97 1500, sometimes won't start with key..
If your key is turning okay in the key cylinder then I would suspect that the ignition switch and /or the rod going to the switch. The igniton switch is located on top of the steering column under the dash, you might want to check that it is not loose or out of adjustment (there is not much in the way of adjustment). Since you say that if you move the column it will start it seems like the switch and or rod going to it.

The ignition switch has about 6 contacts in it, one of which is the crank contact. From reading your post I would suspect a wiring problem in the column, since you can move it and get it to work. Need to open it up and have a look...........Steve

Re: 97 1500, sometimes won't start with key..
When I bought my 95 K1500 used (3rd owner/ 76K mi)- it HAD been equipped for remote start but apparently abandoned or at least not passed on.
No problem for the first year and then I started getting intermittent problems just like you describe except it would also shut off if the column was tilted while running. Got to looking around underneath and sure enough found a REALLY shoddy wiring job. The main (large red) wire had started arcing inside a badly crimped connector and lost contact if jiggled. Completely removed the old remote start unit and made good connections to all wires and it has run fine for 9 years now. Good Luck |
