Buying a car can be FUN!

Too many times I have found myself infront of a desk talking to some salesmen about a car. The most anoying thing about buying a car from a dealership is that it can take hours from your day becasue of all the haggeling involved. My story is the exact oposit. I was helping my brother buy his first car. I've been through the process a number of times so I figured I had better go with him and show him how it's done. Instead of going back and forth with the salesmen, as he goes back and forth with the guy who actually deals with the money, I went stright to they guy who deals with the money. After inspecting the car and doing some research the car was in good condition, but they were asking HIGH value price for it, as most dealerships do.

I said, "Look you and I both know that you have that car priced at high book value." He nods and I go on. "We both know that the car is not worth high book value and here's the list showing all the stuff thats wrong." I slide him the list, which includes how much it would cost to fix all the minor things wrong with the car. "Because of all this I'm only willing to offer you mid to low book value for the car of 4600." He seriously looks at my list and the table for like 5 minutes before he says anything. He knew that I had done my research and totally turned the tables on him. We got the car for 4700 and he wasn't to happy about letting it go for that price. He was really nice to us when he sat down and rather upset when we left. They had it priced at 6K. The whole process only took 10 minutes and we came back latter to sign the paperwork so we didn't have to wait around for it to be completed.

Average time to buy a car: 4 hours. For us it only took a total of 30 minutes.

Anyone else have an amazing car buying story.

Re: Buying a car can be FUN!

When I bought my 2006 Uplander last fall the process took less than an hour.I had done my research as I always do when am buying something, and called ahead to make sure the vehicle I was interested in was still available. This time I was able to use the internet to it's full extent to research everything about what I wanted and the cost. I saw a vehicle i was interested in and when I called , I got the salesman's name,(he was actually the sales manager.) I went to the dealer with my family, on a Saturday afternoon just before they closed for the day. I took a quick test drive and then sat down with the salesman. I told him all about the vehicle and what I wanted to pay. he knew I had done my research, especially after I told him I would walk out if he didn't meet my price. He went to see his boss, (yeah right, probably went to the bathroom or to get a drink) Came back about 5 minutes later and tried to offer a slightly higher price. I said no and started to get up to leave. he then said "All right." he would meet my price. The vehicle was listed for $20,795 with 8,600 miles on it. I ended up getting it for $16,900. Going near closing time on a weekend and bringing rambunctious kids also helped .
