Problem shifting 86 toyota pickup

1986 Toyota Pickup SR5 4X4 has trouble shifting. When I first start the truck I have no problems shifting if the truck is cold. But as the truck warms up I have difficultly shifting from neutral to 1st or reverse when the truck is not moving. When shifting to first from neutral it will not go into gear. When shifting from neutral to reverse the gears grind a lot and will not go into gear. If I let out the clutch and wait 10 seconds and try shifting again sometimes I can get it into gear but I usually have to use some force on the shift lever. When the truck is moving I can shift between all the forward gears but there is a little resistance after the truck has warmed up.

sounds like you need a clutch solinoid located on the transmission easy to replace went through several of them

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what the clutch solinoid is. There is a clutch master cylinder, which I replaced recently, and a clutch slave cylinder which is located on the transmission. I haven't replaced the slave cylinder yet thinking it was okay because I'm not losing any fluid.

I had similar problems with my 84 Runner, except the grinding.
Tranny was worn. I swapped in a W56 tranny from a 92 and problem solved.
Turns out it was more worn then I thought, it was actually creating drag.
I have more power and better MPG.

I finally got around to replacing the clutch slave cylinder. There is no change in
the problem shifting. I think it must be that the transmission is wearing out. Although I'm open to any other ideas of what might be the problem. Thanks bigboy06 and fourwd1 for your advise.

Have you considered the clutch just may be wearing out?
How many miles on it?

The clutch was replaced about 30,000 miles ago. But, I found out from the previous owner that when this was done the flywheel was resurfaced. I'm thinking maybe the flywheel needs a shim in order for the transmission to shift properly.

Sounds like the same problem I had in my 87 4x4 I ended up replacing the trans.

Well, as far as a shim, you don't need anything like that. The hydraulic system is self adjusting. And if that doesn't adjust it enough, then there is is an adjustment up at the pedal. The problem that a lot of people have with getting their flywheel resurfaced is the machine shop not putting the proper step down on the flywheel. There's probably a technical term for it, but basically it's the different thickness of the flywheel where the clutch disc makes contact versus the clutch cover mounting to the flywheel. I can't remember exactly what it is, but I know from past experience that if that step down isn't right, it can cause all kinds of problems. I don't know if this helps your problem, but just giving you some info.

Have you tried replacing the clutch flex hose? That is the problem I have had.

I haven't tried replacing the clutch flex hose. It isn't leaking so I've thought it's okay. How can it affect the shifting?

The Toyota dealer told me that was my problem and that it was leaking. Not a large leak, no puddle or anything. I have also heard that just the breakdown of the interior of the hose will also reduce the pressure or something. The dealer quoted me $107.68 for replacement parts and labor. Also the Toyota part number is 96950-32755, cost of hose was. $34.79 of total. Hope this helps you.
