99 GT Stalls/Dies Part Deux
I thought I had my intermittent problem of the car stalling and die'n after the fuel pump had been R & R'd. No such luck. I erased the P0452 code a couple of days ago. Yesterdy, I drove the car about 40 miles and it died as I was coasting to stop. I was able to get it home with out incident. I fired up the car this morning (0430) a minute or so later it died while driving down the driveway. It would not start. Waited a few minutes, fired it up, got turned around and back to its parking spot before it started die'n, chugging. As I came to a stop, I looked down at the dash quick enough to see the RPM gauge momentarily drop from 15K or so down to 4K rpm hesitate a split second as the oil pressure guage was already illuminated and then drop to zero. I didn't see the SES light until the engine quit.
Question: I am looking at the results of a bad crank sensor? Could a TPS create this issue with out throwing a code?

Re: 99 GT Stalls/Dies Part Deux
Try the CPS first. The fact that it would restart after stalling is a good sign that it is bad. Now that it won't start it has probably failed totally.

I agree with Lynn (GTP Dad) that you're suspicion of the CKPS is correct. the fact that the tach dropped just prior to the car chugging and dying pretty much assures it.

Re: 99 GT Stalls/Dies Part Deux
Update:
I found the time to install the CPS this evening. The car started and idled roughly and died. I fired it up again and rev'd up the motor to 15K rpm; the idle settled down and I let the car warm up for a bout a minute . I drove around my circular driveway a few times and the car didn't die. I let it sit and idle until the I could see the needle on the temp gauge start moving past 160 deg. I then drove it a few miles, came back to the house, let it sit idling when it quit. The car fired right up and I drove it again for 5 minutes or so not going faster than 45 mph and was unable to replicate the problem. I didn't want to go to far being out in rural area and the wifey not available to rescue me. I'm go to take it for a drive to town tomorrow (70 miles round trip) and see if the issue has been resolved. Stay tuned!

Re: 99 GT Stalls/Dies Part Deux
You might want to change the fuel pump relay just to be certain that it isn't failing on you. This will cause a stalling issue too.

Re: 99 GT Stalls/Dies Part Deux
Swapping the fuel pump relay was a good suggestion. I did it (only cost $15 at Kragens) after the car was driven to town and I experienced 2 chugs and it died in town. On highway 101 while going to town (20 mins into the trip), the car was running at 25K rpms when for a few seconds the engine lost power and the rpms dropped to 22-23K. In town, I was driving 35 mph and the engine quit. I did a rolling re-start with no problem.
Well..After the relay was put in, I drove the car back home and 15 miles from town on highway 101, the car seem to lose power, yet I tried to rev the engine by pumpiing the gas and nothing happened, even though I was doing 65-70 mph the rpm gauge was registering at 21K or so; I couldn't rev the engine at all plus the car felt like it had no power. The wife was driving behind me and said that the car was belching black, stinky smoke while I was experiencing my trouble with the car. After 30 seconds or so the engine finally died and I performed another rolling start and headed home. Oh BTW, no codes were saved in the 'puter.

Re: 99 GT Stalls/Dies Part Deux
Try unplugging the MAF sensor. They will occasionally mess up without tripping a CEL. If the car runs ok with the MAF unplugged (after a short adjustment period from the PCM), then I'd suspect it's bad. If that doesn't help, you need to test for proper fuel pressure.

Hey Rich! Looks like its the MAF sensor. I drove the car for 30 minutes this evening with out experiencing any chugs or stalls/dies issues after I disconnected the MAF sensor. I'll update this thread after I buy a new MAF and install it in my Flaming Tomato.

Re: 99 GT Stalls/Dies Part Deux
Thanks Rich! Installed a new MAF sensor this weekend and drove the car with out experiencing the intermittent chugs and sudden engine shut off issues.

Re: 99 GT Stalls/Dies Part Deux
You're very welcome eippermx, and thank you for letting us know it did the trick. That way, if someone else having a similar issue reads this thread, they'll know what to try on their car.
