Belt Tensioner
I have a 98 Regal that i need to replace the belt tensioner on. Took it to the shop and they want to charge around $500 to do. Checked witht the local autoparts and to parts cost about $100 and thats with the belt. Anyway, any feed back on the level of diffucilty and how you go about replacing it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Belt Tensioner
Welcome to AF.
Is this a LS or GS model? The tensioner is a DIY job which will save on labor charges. The alternator must be removed. The tensioner has 3 bolts that secure it to the engine. The heater hoses must be removed. Once the tensioner bolts are removed the tensioner will come off but may need to be pryed off because of the way it is secured. Next there is a 90 degree plastic coolant elbow from the tensioner to the lower intake manifold. That should be replaced along with the o-rings.

BTW - On the serpentine drive belt it is highly recommended to go with the Goodyear Gatorback.

Re: Belt Tensioner
I have a 97.5 GS. My tension pulley fell off. I went to the dealer and they told me I had to buy the whole tensioner to get the pulley... A bunch of BS. I found a pulley at an auto store for $15. i did not have to remove anything to put it on. ....Did the pully fall off?....When you try to move the tensonier does it move?
