95 s10 5sp trans question

Trans Problems. I have a 1995 Chevy S10 4.3 2wd. 5sp. The trans has gone out on me, When i first got the truck i towed it from NJ to Va and took the drive shaft off. well no one told me or i just didnt know that the trans fluid leaks when you do that so i drove it for about 4 months with out any trans fluid. I took it to a guy down the street who is good with trans and he took it apart and said it was toast so i was going to drive it into the ground. Well 3 years later it finaly goes out. he told me that it was a trans that was only one year the new venture trans and i was wondering if he was right and can you put any other trans in it?
