subframe bushings

Well Today my sub frame bushing gave out. I was going over a railroad crossing and these tracks are a little high as sone as I did I felt some thing bad it was a sound I heard before. Every once in awhile I here a niose when I accel. from a red light or stop.(Normal acceleration) I noticed the bushing where like rotted out but was on the list to fix just so much to do witht this car havn't got to it as of now. As soon as it happen I heard the same sound Its not real loud but noticible and steering was hard I got it to my brothers about 1 mile and 5 turns (corners) later. Thats when I looked under the car the sub fram (back half) was about 4 in off the ground. Would it be normal to have very very hard steerinf if this happened becouse the engine is tilted maybe wieght is on suspension and steering parts or do you think I damages something major when sub fram fell?
