Re: Ls 2.2 Intake
The engine cover is separate from the air intake. That giant intake resonator clamped to the throttle body is an ugly beast. What ever custom air intake you decide on, make sure it has provisions for the secondary air injection pump suction hose and a stub for the breather line. From what I understand, the MAF sensor unscrews from inside the outlet of the factory air filter box. You have to move that over to an aftermarket air intake as well. The air injection hose is the large hose plumbed into the top of the air filter box. GM sells their own air intake, so they dont frown upon it too bad from a warranty standpoint. Obviously you have to use caution with oiled / reusable air filters when it comes to MAF sensors.

Re: Ls 2.2 Intake
I've had the cover off and the valvecover looks sweet but the resonater is BUTT UGLY!!! I know what I need in an intake and you give good info for those not informed and to add to your info the brace/bracket welded to the intake tube would also be nice but I can live with the cheap bend your oun brace if the price is right Ihad a true cold air on my cav and it was only $50 but I would like a short ram for my 'balt I may also buy a AEM filter to avoid oil getting on the MAF senser

Re: Ls 2.2 Intake
Yeah, too bad this forum is pretty dead.
Hopefully it will liven up. Keep an eye out on eBay for a CAI. Like I say, the only thing that makes the mid 2006+ 2.2's complicated is the secondary air injection hose on the factory air filter box. Most of your CAI's will not have provisions for that & you cannot draw unfiltered air into the secondary air injection blower (down low between the radiator and engine oil pan) You could rig something up with a breather element type air filter. They are just a mini clamp-on type cone filter. eBay's got those too.Joel

Re: Ls 2.2 Intake
There is a 90deg elbow on the top of the filter box. Attached to it is a 3/4", maybe even bigger diameter hose/pipe. All mid 2006 and up 2.2's have it. If you trace it, it runs directly to the electric secondary air injection blower.

Re: Ls 2.2 Intake
Wow, that's sweet if the 5spd's don't have it! Never took that into consideration. Less parts = less hassle. Especially when it comes to emissions stuff like this. No sweat now with a CAI. You only need provisions for the breather line to the cam cover.

Re: Ls 2.2 Intake
Do you know if the MAF is the same as a Toyota Corolla Type S? The Cobalt engine is made by Toyota. If so Ebay has Corolla short rams for $35-$40 that should work.

You'd think they'd know the product line. Good idea on swapping over your MAF to a yota CAI. That should work and save you some bucks.Joel

Re: Ls 2.2 Intake
Don't listen to salesmen they don't know crap.
The ECOTEC was never touched by Toyota. ECOTEC was developed in Europe by SAAB (another GM family) and Opel. Then it made the transition to the American market because GM wanted a better 4 cylinder engine for its cars. Toyota was never involved. This being said, theres no way in hell the Toyota MAF and Cobalt MAF would be at all interchangable and even if they were you wouldn't GAIN ANYTHING. As a matter of fact you'd hurt the engine. MAF's are specially made for each car they go into, NEVER SWAP MAF's. As far as intakes, go COLD AIR. Otherwise with a short ram you'll suck in HOT AIR which basically eliminates the purpose of an intake. With Short Rams on an intake you gain 2 WHP. Cold Air's gain you 7 WHP. (dyno proven). you have 2 options for GOOD intakes. (cold air) Injen AEM Short Ram Intakes are: Injen (modular system, the one INJEN intake can be both SRI and CAI) K&N Weapon R Don't waste money on Fujita with a 2.2, its not made for it and is ghetto as hell. Don't worry about sucking up water in your CAI, you'd have to drive through a damn river. |
