Is this picture real?

If so what causes the flames to come out of the exhaust?

you bet it's real. there are kits available that can make flames come out of your exhaust up to 20 feet. Kickin'!

Sometimes with very high-boost turbos where lag is huge, when the driver lets off the throttle, gas is released into the exhaust tubing right before the turbo and ignited so that the turbos are constantly spooled up.

Rally cars use it.

Or it could be a flamethrower kit.

If you watch race cars on a road course, you often get flame coming out of the exhaust... then again, thats because of valve overlap, and the speed of the engine...

As for flamethrower kits, don't expect them to work on a late model Porsche, unless you have seriously altered the engine... Flamethrowers work off unburned gasoline in your exhaust, still at a very high temperature. When the gasoline comes into contact with airm the result is a highly combustable mixture. Most kits use a spark plug to ignite the mixture, and produce a big flame that shoots out the back. Sort of looks like an alcohol fire.

However, with a late model Porsche, the hydrocarbon emissions are so low, you would be able to get any flame.

Cant confirm from the size of the pic if its real or not, but it could very easily be real. Ive seen many highly-tuned turbo 911's spew fire from their exhausts. I wouldnt recommend it, but a lot of people like that!

it's a fair job with photoshop (better than i could probably do), but not perfect, the supposed flames arent throwing any light against the car, and there's no reflection of the flames either (there should be on a nice shiny Porsche)

That makes sense, but theres something about it that looks real.. i still cant make up my mind... where's the pic from? if its from a respectable magazine it will be 100% authentic

This is the best I could do. On the main page here for the 750 GTR Evo, they have the same pcitures, with the reflection of the flames on the rear bumper. It's from GEMBALLA, which, being the maker of this car should be respected.
