Transfer case
Recently was driving in major traffic and jeep started to jerk like brake was on while driving, could not go faster than 40mph, also had a major banging from under the vehicle as i have had for about 3-6 months now. Well I took it to the garage and he calls me back to tell me I need a NEW transfer case and a complete brake job including front rotors calipers hoses pads and would not do 1 without the other for a total of $2700. the case had 9000MI on it. I told the guy that I can get a reman case from DCX for 1300 and he said he won't install it, well being the ahole I am decided to ask to see the brakes and show me the case as niether he would, well I decided to take my jeep and my service manual from DCX and my labor sheet from DCx and show this cat that I aint no dummy and he was full of shit, so I have it and will do my own work in 3hr fior case and brakes are fine they just got really hot from stop and go. Thanks and suggestions or ?'s

Re: Transfer case
Smart move - although a transfer case is a big job to do on your back,...assuming you don't have a lift. If anything, take it to a reputable mechanic. Let the BBB know about that other loser

Re: Transfer case
Changing transfer cases is not that hard of a task.
Can be done in a driveway without a lift while the jeep is still on all 4 wheels. You have to remove both front and rear driveshafts, disconnect some wiring and unbolt it from the transmission. Couple hours at most. You didnt say what year the jeep was or what transfer case you have.

Re: Transfer case
You'll want a decent floor jack, but I did mine by myself in about an hour and a half on the floor. Talk to Transfercases Unlimited. He built mine and has been a great guy and helped me out with some other projects. Do the 242!!!

Re: Transfer case
I did mine without a jack. Just be carefull not to damage the seal when lifting it up and sliding it back into position.
You dont even need to remove the crossmember.

Re: Transfer case
You dont have to stick another 247 back in.. What about the 242 from the same year or so for the easiest swap.
http://www.neow.org/NV242j.html The 242 will give you 2WD, 4WD Fulltime, 4WD Parttime and 4WD Low options.

Re: Transfer case
No its not..
The bezel is only for your benefit.. your vic will still display the mode your in if you need to know. I have a piece of black tape over mine.. The transfer case is mechanical not electrical..so the jeep doesnt need to know what the transfer case is doing. I would personally find a 242 at a salvage yard from the same year as yours. Grab the bezel too while you there if you need it. But this is all worthless if you arent doing it yourself and wanting to save money. Like said not all shops will use parts gotten somewhere else.
