frustrating problem, no mechanic has answer
i have a 93 beretta. this problem began about a month ago. i was sitting at a RR crossing and went to turn around, when i turned the wheel all the way, my car died. it will start again and then die when you try to go anywhere. the mechanic came and got it and couldnt find anything wrong with it. ran a diagnostic and got nothing. i picked it up and it did it again about one a week whenever i would idle for longer than a stoplight and then try to turn. yesterday it did it pretty hardcore. whenever you turn the steering wheel past a certain point, the car will die. it will do it in drive, reverse, and neutral. no leaking and no check engine light. any ideas??? thanks.

Re: frustrating problem, no mechanic has answer
I had a 91 Buick that did this, never found the problem but normally it is a wire somewhere making contact with a hot area, such as exhaust manifold etc. I have talked with others who were lucky enough to trace theirs out and this is what they usually found. Not much help I know, but look at all wiring in contact with engine, and possibly under the steering for shorted wires. I know certain model ford Explorers for example were notorius for this. Good luck.

when it dies, it just dies. i have power to everything and all the dummy lights are on, it acts like when they key is on, but you haven't started it yet.

Re: frustrating problem, no mechanic has answer
Here's a thought. Don't run the steering rack all the way to the locks.
It sounds like the relief valve in the PS pump is not opening at an adequately low pressure. Using the wrong viscosity oil in the PS system can aggravate the problem. If you were using air conditioning at the same time, and the car has a PS pressure switch, make sure the switch is opening under pressure. You might also want to clean and lube the IAC stepper motor, since it is apparently not reacting quickly enough to prevent the stall.

Re: frustrating problem, no mechanic has answer
I have 92 3.1 beretta, mine did the same. I found a short in the wire harness ontop of the trans by the fire wall ( just under the master cylinder). Lift the harness off the trans, tie it up , and drive the car . If this works , check each wire for a burn or rub . Let me know at [email protected].
