transmission linkage off

i just swapped engines in my 96 cavalier and the car is running, but it will not go into park. when the shift lever is in the park position, the transmission is in reverse, and then when i put it in the reverse position it is still in reverse, drive position is neutral and so on through the rest of the positions as they are all off. any help as to what to do to correct this will be greatly appreciated. the car has a 2.2 motor, and a three speed transmission. the engine that i swapped in, came from a 96 sunfire with a three speed.
